11 Billion Fewer Miles in March

11 Billion Miles!  That's a lot of driving and that's how many fewer miles Americans drove in March 2008 as compared to March 2007, according to The Department of Transportation.  This also represents the largest downward turn in driving since 1942.

All I can say is....it's about time!  I think that most drivers are like my wife and they don't necessarily plan their trips.  If you need to go to Costco, Target, and the gym, try to coordinate and plan your trips.  It's amazing how much you can reduce your driving.  Carpooling is another great way to cut your driving in half or even a third.

I know this will be a hard adjustment for most of us.  After all, this is the land of the free and the home of the SUV, Big Gulp, and Supersized Big Mac meals.  Enough is enough.  We all need to take a long hard look at where we can cut cost.  Maybe a walk or bike ride to the store won't hurt our wallets or our waistlines.

I will say that if there is one word that describes us as a society, it's resourceful.  When faced with a challenge, we usually invent our way out of it a jam, so this gas crunch should be no exception.  The automotive industry is working on Diesel, Natural Gas, Fuel Cell, Electric, Hydrogen, and Hybrid technologies.  There are inventors working on biodiesel and water powered cars so the private sector is also on board with a solution.  Maybe what we all need is gastric bypass surgery for our bloated lifestyles.  STOP IT America!  We can all do our share.  None of us are entitled to drive H2 Hummers or Mercedes-Benz S63s that get 10 miles per gallon....no matter how much money we make.

The good news is that a revolution is developing right before our eyes.  Where my neighbors always used to ask me about how fast my cars go, they now ask about how many miles per gallon they get.  Mustangs and Corvettes used to draw attention, but now it's Smart Cars and Civic Hybrids that turn heads.
