The 70's brought us station wagons, the 80's minivans, the 90's sport utility vehicles, and this decade brings us the evolution of the crossover. Part wagon, part SUV, and part minivan, crossovers are outselling SUVs and in a way, have brought the American market full circle with regards to their family car needs.
Crossovers certainly look most like station wagons and they drive like them too with their low center of gravity and car-like performance. They are taller than station wagons, but shorter than SUVs. Some are even available with third row seating. But is a crossover right for you?
Let's start with the top non-luxury models.
Most of these models are relatively fresh and all are priced between $25,000 and $35,000. It comes down to what's important to you as a Crossover buyer. Is it size, performance, off-road capability? For that you'll have to read the individual reviews, but in general I like the new crossovers from GM (Saturn Outlook and GMC Acadia) because they offer a lot of vehicle for the money, 3rd row seating, and they look really good on the road. They have a nice stance and in my opinion, have managed to capture the true essence of what a crossover vehicle should be.
Moving towards the luxury models, we have these to select from:
The Acura MDX and BMW X5 are both new for 2007 and really seem to understand the mindset of the luxury crossover buyer. These vehicles are fun to drive, come loaded with features, and offer third row seating.
