Is 400 the new 300?

400 is the new 300. It seems only a few years ago that cars breaking the 300-horsepower barrier were considered "high-performance." But today we are seeing new numbers from manufacturers that make 300 seem ordinary. The new BMW M3 has 414hp and the new Mercedes-Benz C63 boasts 451. And later this year, Cadilac will roll out the most powerful vehicle in their history, the 550-horsepower CTS-V. My only question is where? Where are average, 9 to 5 commuters going to use that kind of power. Even on the rare ocassions when we get valuable track time, it's rare we are pushing these cars to their engineered limits. In a society where bigger is better, it's no wonder we keep pushing for more powerful ways to move us. I just wonder when the horsepower race will evolve into the MPG race. Perhaps when gas reaches $5, $6, or maybe $10 per gallon?
